I watched Kept in VH1 yesterday. I complain about reality shows conquering the boob tube, but I still end up watching them. Haha. (Uso ba sa Pinas?) One of my favorites are the Real World/Road Rules Challenges. I'll make a post about the rise of reality shows, but this post is about my "kitchen memories" in high school.
In that episode of Kept, the guys were asked to plan a dinner party. Watching the show made me reminisce. All of my Food Technology memories in high school came to my mind. You see, we had this subject in my high school. It was called Food Technology. We learned a lot about, well, uhm, food. It was seperated into two: lecture and lab. We talked about the theoretical aspect in lecture and we cooked in lab. Our class will be separated into groups and we would be given recipes. It was always fun. After cooking, we would give them to teachers for evaluation and share them with the other groups. We would just go around the kitchen and make sure that they have enough for us. After that, we'd wash our own plates (okay, sometimes, the job was left with the dishwasher, but still.)
I am not a good cook. Actually, I am not a cook. That is why I have no idea why I was always assigned as a cook. I was even the head cook a couple of times! I could cut, chop, shred, and peel. However, I refuse to turn on the oven, pour oil on the pan, and be anywhere near a frying pan that splashes oil all over. One time, I had to shred papayas, the green ones, to make atsara (pickled papayas). I was in the kitchen for about two hours shredding papayas. I shred the papaya standing up, sitting down, and kneeling down. I told my teachers:
"Ma'am, ayoko na makakita ng atsara. Ikinamumuhian ko na ang papaya."
Translation: "Ma'am, I don't want to see atsara anymore. I now despise it."
They were just laughing and laughing, but I still finished it anyway. (I think the shredded papayas were enough for five bottles. Hehe.) But after that, you just feel good that you made your own bottle of a popular Filipino...garnish? Hehe.
Sometimes, it would annoy me when some of my groupmates would just be sitting down and chatting with other people while some of us were crying because of chopped onions, washing utensils, and actually cooking the dish. But, one event really made me proud. That was the formal dinner. Each year, the juniors would plan a dinner event. Each year would have a different theme and the students would plan everything-- from the set-up, the invitations, the cooking, everything! That year, our theme was Silver Wedding Anniversary. Surprise, surprise. I was assigned as head cook along with my friend Joan, who was also the kitchen manager. We would get excused from classes because we had to set-up the gym, practice waiting tables, pre-prep the food, etc. The whole batch really bonded. On the day of the event, the whole place just looked so beautiful. We had fresh flowers all over. The table-skirting (I think that's the term) was said to be done like a college class. The programme was great, complete with the married couple (RJ's parents). The whole batch did everything to make it the best and it surely was. (Okay, I know every year they say it's the best.) But what the guests didn't get to see, was the chaos that was going on behind the scenes.
I didn't get to see the programme because I was busy putting food on the plates. Some of the dishwashers were in the kitchen washing A LOT of plates. The waitresses were rushing to serve their guests before the soup got cold. Goblets and glasses were shattered. Friends were reprimanding each other.
We were dead tired, but in the end, it all paid off. We got good remarks and we didn't have to go to school the next day. Aww, Kaakibat, so proud! Hehe.
I've always thought that that subject was useless. Why put it in the high school curriculum as four units? (credits) Now I'm glad I had that class. I don't wash the dishes when I'm in Manila, but now I have to. We were taught how to serve guests, and I ended up getting a job at a food place. We were taught how to buy food products, and now, uh, I don't do the groceries, but I know it's helpful.
I'm glad I had that class because it was much more useful in real life than studying subjects like----sige, hindi na. Baka magalit si Ms. Nueva eh. Hehe. ;)

I did not have a home for a day.
Okay, just from 8-5. I couldn't stay at home because there was an apartment inspection today. I decided to spend the whole day at the local library. Yipee. I feel at home with the books, magazines, and silence. I read and skimmed at least 3 books and a few mags. I also looked at the College Blue Book for scholarships. (College=big money. I need money.) So that's my achievement for the day. I really enjoyed staying at the library (even though one of the workers are probably wondering why I was there for almost 8 hours. Hehe.)
Anyway, I'm just going to fill you in with what happened last week.
Wednesday. I attended the last cricket practice and it was so hot and sunny that I almost blacked out. I don't think I can survive the heat in Manila anymore! I'll need a portable aircon. Hehe. It was Lewi's birthday that day (Happy birthday, Lewi!) and we (Isabelle, Kim, Anna, Tenny, and I) decided to eat at Tara Thai. It was the best Thai food trip I've ever had. :)
Thursday. Isabelle and I went to the mall at lunch time to watch "The Sisterhood of Traveling Pants". I didn't read the book, but I still wanted to watch the movie since Amber Tamblyn said it wasn't the typical teeny-bopper movie. She was right. I was on the verge of tears with that movie! I loved everything about it. The setting was even in Bethesda! Hehe. They showed Santorini, Greece and it was just so beautiful. Isabelle and I said Wow as soon as we saw the view in Lena's window. I want to visit that place someday. :) After that, we went to eat at a cafe. That's when one of my most embarrassing moments happened. I won't go into details, though. Haha. My embarrassment started to go away when we visited a nearby pet shop. We got to play with two puppies! I love puppies. (I miss my dachshunds *sob*) They just made me smile. Isabelle and I talked about sharing a dog. It seemed like a good idea, but I know I can't have a puppy. Hehe. I told Isabelle that if we were going to have a puppy, Duchess would be a good name. We have a name; we just don't have the dog. Oh well. We went to Isabelle's and I started being quiet (because of the embarrassing incident). Isabelle assured me that I will feel better because we were going out that night. Tenny, Kim, Lewi, and I went to Platinum. It was empty. I could slide on the dance floor, but at least it helped me forget and besides, I love dancing by itself so it's okay. hehe. After Platinum, we tried to go to IHOP, which was supposedly a 24-hour food chain, but to our suprise, it was closed. What the heck? Is it only open 24-hours on the weekends?
Friday. I went with Isabelle to get a fish. Then, went to the office to help make our uniforms for the cricket tournament the next day. Our shirts our so cute. They're really comfy, too. Later that night, Kim, Isabelle, and I went to eat at TGIF. Yum. When I got home, I called my best friend back home. We were finally able to talk to each other! Wee :D
Saturday. Tournament day! :) I didn't get enough sleep, though. For some reason, I couldn't sleep. I kept waking up every hour. That caused a major headache and half-closed eyes at the time of the tournament. I went to the tournament venue with Malcolm, Anna, and our teammate Sandra. I took a quick nap on the way, hoping it would help. We had trouble looking for the cricket fields, but we eventually found them and it was a really good place. :) The Sri Lankan community has good community events. I wished we had events like those, too. Like a patintero, moro, langit at lupa, luksong tinik, and luksong baka tournament. That would be fun. Haha. Anyway, I had so much fun with the game itself. We lost 48-37, but hey, we still had fun! Thanks to Dilini for introducing the sport to me! Thanks to the Lady Crickets: Tasheia, Anna, Mudi, Nisansa, Sandra, and Efra for the experience! And Congratulations to Rasan and Upul (spell check) for being the champions. After the tournament, Enoch, Isabelle, and I went to watch Mr. and Mrs. Smith, while Malcolm and Anna watched Batman Begins. I liked Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The storyline was good. It was unlike any other. Their marriage is so funny. Hehe. I love Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. A good movie, yet again!
Sunday. Happy birthday to my mom! :D Yey. She got home early from Philadelphia. I drove the whole day. (Practice makes perfect! But then again, nobody's perfect..so..hmm..) I'm finally getting the hang of it and I just need to learn to slow down when making turns. Haha. It's also father's day today fathers day to my lolo in heaven and my uncle all the way in Japan. Of course, happy father's day to my Mom, too. Hehehe.
So there. That was my busy week.
Busy week=less hours of sleep= eyebags= raccoon eyes.
Still fun. ;)

| You get an apartment to live in. That's already a blessing. But then, you start wanting a house. So you get a one-bedroom townhouse. After awhile, you start wanting a two-bedroom.
You get a cellphone that's simple, and hey, it works! Then you start wanting to have a colored screen. You splurge to get colored screens and polyphonic tones. But then you realize that you want a camera phone!
You're given a gift. It's the PS2 you've always wanted. You feel like you're on cloud nine. Then you see ads of the PSP after a few months. All of a sudden, you look at your PS2 like it was an invention from decades earlier. All of your excitement has been used. When someone says, "Wow, you have a PS2!" You answer, "Yeah. But I want the PSP now."
It's hard when you start wanting more in life. Rather than being content with what you have been blessed with, you seek for more. Is it because of greed? Or do we just want the best things in life?
It's even harder when you start wanting more in life, but you know you just can't have it.
And I'm not even talking about material things alone.

I'm back from Philadelphia!
I can't believe I survived without internet! Hehe. We left friday afternoon and the traffic was terrible! We were moving like turtles (15mph) on the interstate! Those are the times when you wish they'd invent cars that fly. Not only that, it was raining hard. Everytime we're in Philadelphia, it's always raining. Thank goodness it cleared up for the weekend. My mom had work the whole time that we were there and I was stuck in the hotel room. I was stuck because there's no way I can go downtown and also because I was sick. I've been sick since Wednesday. I couldn't even talk. That's why I wasn't able to answer some calls. I don't like it when I'm sick. Clogged nose, hearing difficulties, swallowing pain. Urgh. I'm getting better, though. I think just a few more days of rest. :) My mom and I were able to go around late Saturday afternoon, though. I took pictures (as usual. I love pics. ;) I finally got to set foot at the Museum of Art, ugh, just outside, though. But it's all good. Hehe. By Sunday night, we were on our way back and I rushed to my laptop. Hehe.
While I was away, Kas called me up and invited me to Niagara Falls. Kuya Enrique also called me up and invited me to the Filipino festival. Anna sent a text, too. I heard about the filipino festival during the month of June from my Mongolian classmate in music. She told me that she had lots of Filipino friends and they took her to one of the festivals. I told myself that I would go, but I was out of town. Bummer. Oh well. Maybe next time.
Happy birthday to my Lolo! Happy birthday, Pat!
Loveyoulots! | | |
